Wild Words: All glory comes from daring to begin

Starting Light Rust Studio seemed scary at first. I had never run a business or sold anything online before. I was timid and unsure when to turn the key to start the engine. After so much time fretting about it, I knew I would never feel completely set—I just needed to start. So in November 2013 I officially set my Etsy shop live.

Through the year and a half since, I can say I have learned a lot. I have learned many things I would have never been able to know without trying. That is why the quote "All glory comes from daring to begin" truly speaks to me. Without daring to begin, I would not be where I am now. And I continue to remember this each day as I go through my to-do list and projects with the studio.

Just the other day I posted my first painting done through the studio. I had been working on it for about a month, and while I loved it, I wasn't sure what the response was going to be. It was unlike anything I had done up to this point and I hadn't touched a canvas since 2010. On Tuesday morning I decided to do a little Instagram teaser and I revealed the painting just to get it out there. The response was overwhelming and my painting sold in minutes—before I could even properly list it. If that's not reassuring, I don't know what is.

The point however is not about the painting selling. It's about having the courage to start something and to put yourself out there. We all have the ability to chase our dreams and do whatever makes us happy—its just about the actual doing. We control our own emotions, so stop making excuses or feeling the need to have everything perfect and just turn your key! Start whatever it is you have been dreaming up. You never know where it might lead you. I for one did not know when I started my Etsy stop full of greetings cards that a year and a half later I would have evolved into a full design studio working on custom pieces like branding and wedding stationery suites. I couldn't be happier with where I have landed in this moment. Go find your happy!
